Renewable Energy in Cyprus

What is energy? -The ability to do work, a physicist would say. The ability to move, walk, cook, drive a car, use a computer, turn on the lights. All these actions require energy.

-Most of the energy we exercise comes from fossil fuels. Petrol, kerosine, natural gas etc. provide us with energy. Usually we convert the chemical energy of the fuels to electricity by burning the
m. This however produces large amounts of Carbon Dioxide which are released in the atmosphere, enhancing the greenhouse effect.

-In order to decrease the emissions of carbon dioxide, other alternative, renewable and green sources of energy must be used. Such energy sources include:
Hydroelectricity
Solar energy
Wind energy

-Here in Cyprus though we cannot effectively use Hydroelectricity since there are no medium to large rivers to harvest their potential energy.

-Although wind energy has started to be used in Cyprus, it accounts for a small percentage of electricity produced, and large scale electricity production wind energy is improbable.

-Solar energy is used to heat water (for house utilities) virtually in every house. However solar energy in Cyprus can be used much more extensively.

-So, since Cyprus has sunshine during most of the year (at least 300 days a year and 3300 - 3500 sunshine hours a year), solar energy has the potential to power the entire island.

-Even though the efficiency of solar cells is fairly low (up to 14%) it can be effectively used in Cyprus, either in large scales or for individual households. Even though solar cells are expensive, in the long run they can cover their own costs and even provide profit, since the electricity costs of the house can fall to zero

To conclude solar energy has the potential to achieve the desirable amount of energy required to power the whole island and to meet the expectations of the European union.

Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations

2012 - European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations

The year is intended to raise awareness of the contribution that older people make to society. It seeks to encourage policymakers and relevant stakeholders at all levels to take action with the aim of creating better opportunities for active ageing and strengthening solidarity between generations.

What is active ageing?
Active ageing means growing old in good health and as a full member of society, feeling more fulfilled in our jobs, more independent in our daily lives and more involved as citizens. No matter how old we are, we can still play our part in society and enjoy a better quality of life. The challenge is to make the most of the enormous potential that we harbour even at a more advanced age. The European Year 2012 seeks to promote active ageing in three areas:
Employment – as life expectancy increases across Europe, pension ages are rising, but many fear that they will not be able to stay in their current jobs or to find another job until they can retire on a decent pension. We must give older workers better chances in the labour market.
Participation in society – retiring from one's job does not mean becoming idle. The contribution of older people to society as carers for others, typically their own parents or spouses and their grandchildren is often overlooked and so is their role as volunteers. The European Year seeks to ensure greater recognition of what older people bring to society and create more supportive conditions for them.
Independent living – our health declines as we grow old, but a lot can be done to cope with this decline. And quite small changes in our environment can make a big difference to people suffering from various health impairments and disabilities. Active ageing also means empowering us as we age so that we can remain in charge of our own lives as long as possible.

Climate Change

Tackling climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face. Unless global action is taken quickly to stabilize the rising temperature of the earth’s surface, there is likely to be irreversible and catastrophic damage.

Cyprus along with the rest of the eastern Mediterranean region, is in an extremely vulnerable climatic state and facing increasing aridity, lack of rainfall, forest fires and desertification. We also face ongoing water shortages, and much more could be done to limit the use of water.

The EU adopted an integrated energy and climate change policy in December 2008, including ambitious targets for 2020. It hopes to set Europe on the right track - towards a sustainable future with a low-carbon, energy-efficient economy - by:

▪ cutting greenhouse gases by 20% (30% if international agreement is reached)
▪ reducing energy consumption by 20% through increased energy efficiency
▪ meeting 20% of our energy needs from renewable sources.

With the passage of time, climatic changes will inevitably become extremely significant! ACT NOW!
